Former FBI agent faces trial in U.S. for working with Russian oligarch Deripaska

A district court judge has declared that Charles McGonigal will be sentenced to 4 years in prison. However, there is still an opportunity to present arguments in his defense.
The verdict has not been announced yet. Judge Riordan stated that before the sentencing, the defendant's lawyers will have the opportunity to present their case in his defense.
Former head of FBI counterintelligence in New York, Charles McGonigal, admitted to working for Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska from spring to fall 2021. He assisted Deripaska in conducting an investigation against another Russian businessman, Vladimir Potanin. For his services, McGonigal received $17,500.
In January 2023, McGonigal was arrested in New York due to his connection with Deripaska, who had come under U.S. sanctions.
Sanctions against Russian oligarchs
Earlier, we reported that Deripaska, along with three Russian citizens, received formal charges from the United States for violating new sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
