Fishballs: Simple and delicious old Ukrainian dish
Fishballs, known since olden times and immortalized by Ukrainian writer Gogol in his works, are making a big comeback. These are little patties made either with fish or meat, or with flour and vegetables. The main ingredients used to be ground in a mortar back in ancient times, according to Food and Mood.
Ingredients:
- Carp (or other fish, preferably white) - 500 g
- Flour - 50 g
- Vegetable oil - 50 ml
- Dill - 15 g
- Black pepper - to taste
- Salt - to taste
- How to cook mincemeat patties:
The fish needs to be cleaned and all bones removed. Then cut the fish meat into pieces and pound it in a mortar until it resembles minced meat.
To the prepared mince, add flour, oil, chopped dill, salt, pepper, and your favorite spices. Mix well.
Place a large or wide saucepan with water on the heat and bring it to a boil. With wet hands, shape the mince into balls and simmer them in salted water for 5-10 minutes.
Such patties can be served with any side dish and vegetables. Prior to serving, a sauce is made from onions, carrots, mushrooms, and a bit of sour cream. Also, after boiling, fish patties can be additionally fried in a pan for 2-3 minutes.
