Expert explains terrible condition caused by reading in car
If you feel nauseous when trying to read a book in a moving car, you're not alone – and there's a scientific reason for this condition that might surprise you.
Why reading in a car is dangerous for the body
Many people feel unwell when trying to read in a moving car. Long journeys can be exhausting, and passengers often read books to pass the time. However, for some, reading in a moving vehicle can cause nausea.
Approximately 30% of people suffer from this problem. The reason lies in sensory conflict when the brain receives conflicting signals from different senses.
In a moving car, the body signals movement, but when focusing on a book, the eyes detect stillness, creating confusion in the brain.
"30% of the population cannot read while they're riding in a moving car and the reason why is hilarious. So, there is this thing called sensory conflict. It is when one of your senses is telling your brain one thing, while another sense telling it something different," explained the expert.
"When you're in a moving car, your body is telling your brain that you're in motion, but when you try to look at a book, that's right in front of you, your eyes are telling your brain that you're standing still, so our brains are really confused. How can we be moving and staying still at the same time?" she added.
The woman clarified that the brain's confusion during motion sickness is similar to a "psychedelic trip," caused by ingesting something harmful, which leads to nausea.
