Global warming is creating ideal conditions for the reproduction of the Asian tiger mosquito. Soon, an exotic disease that causes excruciating joint pain may become a common occurrence in temperate climate zones, according to Daily Mail.

What is known about the virus and mosquitoes

The chikungunya virus, which was previously considered exclusively a problem for people living in the tropics and subtropics, may soon become a real threat for residents of major cities in Europe and North America.

Researchers from Zhejiang Chinese Medical University warn that climate change is creating the perfect environment for the northward migration of dangerous mosquito carriers.

Today, the virus circulates mainly in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia (a total of 139 countries are considered at risk). However, global warming is rapidly expanding these boundaries.

The main driver of the future spread of the infection, scientists say, is the Asian tiger mosquito. Unlike the yellow fever mosquito, this species is much better adapted to cooler conditions.

Dr. Yang Wu notes that rising global temperatures allow these insects to easily establish themselves in new territories that were previously too cold for them. As tiger mosquito populations grow, the likelihood of local chikungunya outbreaks increases significantly.

Why chikungunya is dangerous

The disease was first identified in 1952, but the World Health Organization still classifies it as one of the most under-recognized tropical diseases in the world. The name “chikungunya” comes from the Makonde language of East Africa and literally means “to become contorted.”

This name perfectly describes the main symptom of the infection. Although the virus rarely leads to death, it causes sudden fever and such severe joint pain that a person can literally not straighten up.

In many cases, this unbearable joint pain can last for months, leading to temporary or even permanent disability.

Should we panic now?

According to recent scientific models, by the end of the century, central and northern Europe, as well as the northeastern part of North America, could become new epicenters of the virus.

However, researcher Ye Xu reassures that ordinary citizens should not panic. Instead, this forecast is a serious signal for public health systems.

Medical institutions in temperate regions need to develop rapid response plans now. This includes monitoring mosquito populations, training doctors to quickly recognize regionally unusual chikungunya symptoms, and strengthening disinfection measures in large cities.
