EU to discuss closure of Russian bases with Syrian rebels - Kallas
The European Union will raise the issue of closing Russian bases in Syria due to the influence Russia has there, states the European Union's top diplomat Kaja Kallas.
She noted that the issue of closing Russian bases in Tartus and Khmeimim in Syria was raised by several foreign ministers of EU countries. This will be discussed during initial contact with the opposition forces.
"Many foreign ministers took this up to say that, you know, it should be a condition for the new leadership that they also get rid of the Russian influence there because it is a base where they also conduct their activities toward Africa and southern neighbors. So we will raise this issue with the leadership when we have the meetings," Kallas stated after the EU foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.
