EU leaders plan to speak with Trump ahead of Putin phone call, says Germany's Merz

Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the EU leaders will call US President Donald Trump tomorrow. The call is scheduled just before the American leader's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, informs Deutsche Welle.
Merz said he has already discussed the planned call between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This happened today during the inauguration of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV in the Vatican.
"We agreed that we will speak again with the four state leaders (Britain, Germany, Poland, and France -ed.) and the US president in preparation for this conversation (between Trump and Putin -ed.)," Merz told reporters.
He also noted that right now, hope lies only in further progress. At the same time, he is confident that Europeans and Americans are determined and focused on ending the war.
Additionally, Merz said he spoke today in the Vatican with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Trump's calls with Putin and Zelenskyy
Yesterday, Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he plans to call Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday. He intends to discuss ending the war in Ukraine as well as trade issues.
"I will be speaking, by telephone, to President Vladimir Putin of Russia on Monday at 10:00 a.m. (local time -ed.) The subjects of the call will be stopping the 'bloodbath' that is killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week," Trump said.
He added that after this call, he will speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various NATO member countries.
"Hopefully, it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end. God bless us all!" he said.
