The leaders of the European Union countries have decided to initiate negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina regarding its accession to the bloc, according to the President of the European Council Charles Michel on X and the spokesperson for the President of the European Council, Ecaterina Casinge, on X.

"The European Council has just decided to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Congratulations! Your place is in our European family," Michel wrote.

He noted that such a decision is a crucial step on the path to joining the European Union. After this, persistent work is necessary to become an EU member.

At the same time, the conclusions of the European Council state that the body proposes to the European Commission to prepare the framework for negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina after all necessary steps are taken.

Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU

On December 14, the leaders of the European Union countries approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the bloc during a summit. This happened against the backdrop of threats from Hungary to veto such a decision.

It was later revealed that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not participate in the voting on the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine.

In fact, negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the European Union have not started. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that it is important for negotiations to start as early as June of this year.
