The European Union has instructed Meta Platforms to provide more detailed information on the measures taken to combat sexual harassment of children on Instagram, according to Reuters.

The European Commission has sent a request for information regarding the measures taken to counter the spread of terrorist and violent content and to protect minors.

"Information is also requested about Instagram's recommender system and amplification of potentially harmful content," the statement said.

EU technical regulators have instructed Meta Platforms to provide more detailed information about the measures taken to combat materials of sexual violence against children on its photo and video-sharing app, Instagram, by December 22.

The request was made under the EU Digital Services Act, new technical rules requiring Big Tech to make more efforts to control illegal and harmful content on their platforms.

Failure to comply with such requirements may lead to official investigations and fines.

Combatting child pornography

Legislators in the European Union are developing new rules that require Alphabet, Google, Meta, and other online services to identify and remove child pornography.

The proposal also suggests establishing an EU Center for Child Sexual Violence, which would report cases to the police.
