After prolonged negotiations, the heads of EU member states have reached an agreement on the twelfth package of sanctions against Russia, according to The Guardian.

Details of the new package of economic restrictions are not disclosed, but it is known that the previously recommended package of sanctions by the European Commission included proposals to cut off commercial revenues from trading Russian diamonds and targeted a number of Russian officials and businessmen, including the son of Dmitry Medvedev.

According to sources, although the text was agreed upon by all countries earlier this week, Austria did not give final approval until late Thursday evening.

It is reported that the final decision on adopting the new package of sanctions is expected to be made in the coming days. Additionally, EU countries will seek to coordinate another package of sanctions against Russia before the second anniversary of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

What proceeded this

Earlier, Radio Free Europe correspondent Rikard Jozwiak reported that EU ambassadors again failed to agree on a new package of sanctions against Russia, but this time not due to Hungary.

Austria was the obstacle, complaining that Ukraine included Raiffeisen Bank International in the list of international sponsors of the war.

The new package of sanctions against Russia is primarily focused on measures to combat circumvention of restrictions and includes a ban on the supply of Russian diamonds.
