On January 2, a fire broke out in the Danube Delta following a Russian drone attack on Ankudyniv Island. The blaze spread to the lands of the Vylkove Forestry and Ochakivskyi Island. Residential buildings were not damaged, according to a Facebook post by the Izmail District State Administration.
During an air attack involving a single UAV in the Danube Delta, reeds caught fire on Ankudyniv Island. The fire covered about 10 hectares, and due to the difficult terrain, emergency services currently have limited access to the ignition site, the Izmail District State Administration reported.
The administration added that the blaze spread to lands of the Vylkove Forestry under the Izmail Forestry of the Southern Forest Office branch of Forests of Ukraine, as well as to Ochakivskyi Island via the Ankudynove channel.
Residential buildings are not under threat at this time, as the wind is pushing the flames toward the sea. The situation remains under control, with relevant services monitoring developments and ready to respond if the fire spreads.
Russian attacks on Odesa region
In December, Russia concentrated strikes on Odesa, a key hub for Ukraine’s grain exports and a vital economic artery linking the country to international markets, attacks aimed at undermining the Ukrainian economy.
It was also reported that the region came under a massive attack overnight on December 31, leaving parts of Odesa without electricity, water supply, and heating. Local authorities said civilian and energy infrastructure in the city and region were targeted.
Odesa was among the cities attacked overnight from December 31 to January 1, with damage to energy facilities and fires reported in several areas.
