The administration of US President Donald Trump has introduced new rules for consulates and embassies, according to CBS News.
Under the new directive, US consular officials have been instructed not to issue visas to elderly immigrants or to individuals suffering from certain medical conditions - including diabetes and obesity.
According to a State Department cable sent to missions abroad, such applicants may be considered potential public charges, meaning they could become a financial burden due to possible health issues or age-related limitations.
The new policy aligns with the administration’s broader efforts to restrict immigration based on applicants’ economic self-sufficiency and health conditions.
Expanded list of illnesses
The new guideline lists conditions that may influence visa issuance decisions: cardiovascular diseases, respiratory disorders, cancers, diabetes, metabolic disorders, as well as neurological and mental disorders.
Among additional factors, obesity is mentioned, as it can trigger asthma, sleep apnea, and high blood pressure.
All these conditions may require long-term and costly treatment, which, according to US authorities, should be paid for without using government resources.
Powers of visa officers
The new guidelines significantly expand the authority of visa section staff when assessing applicants.
They are instructed to determine whether the candidate has sufficient funds to cover medical expenses and, based on that, make a decision on visa issuance.
Experts note that such rules may complicate entry to the United States for a significant number of elderly people and those with chronic illnesses.
The Serbian parliament has approved a law allowing the demolition of the former Yugoslav General Staff building in Belgrade, destroyed during NATO bombings, and clearing the site for the construction of a large hotel linked to the business interests of US President Donald Trump’s family.
The US Department of Justice has appealed to the New York Court of Appeals seeking to overturn Donald Trump’s conviction, arguing that procedural violations occurred during the trial that contradict the principle of presidential immunity.
