White coating on the tongue, a simple signal often ignored, but it can actually indicate a serious fluid deficiency in the body.

Verywell health explains what to do if you notice this symptom.

Signs of dehydration

When you are dehydrated, the salivary glands in your mouth do not produce enough fluid. This can lead to bacteria accumulating on the tongue, creating a white coating.

According to MedlinePlus, a white coating on the tongue is not one of the main symptoms of dehydration. Other signs may include:

  • Reduced urination and darker urine than usual;

  • Dizziness;

  • Dry skin;

  • Intense thirst;

  • Irregular heartbeat;

What to do

If you notice these symptoms, it is important to rehydrate safely:

  • Drink water in small sips;

  • Avoid drinking large amounts too quickly, as this can cause an electrolyte imbalance;

  • Supplement water with juice or electrolyte drinks;

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can worsen dehydration;

Seek medical attention if you experience fainting, vomiting, confusion, or severe weakness.

Poor oral hygiene can also cause bacteria to build up on the tongue, leading to a coating. Regular brushing of teeth and tongue, along with eating fruits and vegetables, can help.

When to see a doctor:

  • The coating lasts more than 1–2 weeks;

  • There is pain, bad breath, burning, or bleeding;

  • Other symptoms appear, such as fever, digestive issues, or weakness.
