Oat milk is considered a healthy alternative to regular milk. However, it can pose unexpected risks to the body due to its high sugar content and effect on blood glucose levels, according to the American plastic surgeon Dr. Barrett.

Why you should avoid oat milk

In recent years, the popularity of oat milk has increased dramatically, becoming an alternative to dairy products for coffee lovers.

Dr. Barrett urged against drinking oat milk, claiming that it can raise blood sugar levels and contains unhealthy additives.

Unlike regular milk, which contains a balanced content of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, oat milk is predominantly carbohydrates with minimal protein. It means that drinking it can cause a large increase in blood sugar levels, potentially even more than traditional coffee creamer.

Although many people are switching to oat milk, believing it to be a better alternative. But its sugar content can have undesirable health effects.

The second issue Barrett emphasizes is seed oils, particularly canola oil, in many oat milk brands. Some manufacturers add oils to achieve a smoother, richer texture. But these oils can be harmful to gut health and should be avoided altogether.

Those who are looking for an alternative to regular milk with fewer carbohydrates and no added oil, consider unsweetened almond or coconut milk.

Who should not drink oat milk

Oat milk may seem like a healthy alternative to cow's milk, but it's not for everyone. This drink should be avoided or limited to the following categories of people:

  • people with diabetes and insulin resistance - oat milk contains natural sugars, and store-bought versions often have an additional sweetener that can dramatically increase blood glucose levels
  • those who follow a gluten-free diet - not all oat milk is gluten-free. If oats are contaminated with gluten during production, the drink can cause problems for people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity
  • people with digestive problems - oat milk contains beta-glucans (soluble fiber), which can cause bloating, gas, or discomfort in those with a sensitive gut or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • people with an oat allergy - although it is rare, some people may have an allergic reaction to the proteins in oats
  • those who are trying to lose weight - oat milk contains more carbohydrates than other plant-based milk (e.g. almond or coconut milk), so its frequent consumption can interfere with weight loss.
