Pain that seems normal in women may actually signal a serious condition. Here are the five main signs of endometriosis you should not ignore, according to Health.
Pain in daily life
Severe or exhausting pain during menstruation is not normal.
Dr. Albert Hsu, MD, explained that while periods can be uncomfortable, they should not interfere with daily life.
“Menstrual periods should not cause such terrible cramping pain that you cannot go to work or school,” he said.
If you experience severe menstrual pain, it is important to consult a doctor, as it may be a symptom of endometriosis.
Pelvic pain outside menstruation
According to the National Library of Medicine, people with endometriosis may experience pain during ovulation, bowel movements, or urination.
The type of pain associated with endometriosis outside menstruation can differ from menstrual cramps. Some people describe it as tingling, burning, or pulsating sensations. Pain may also radiate to other areas, such as the abdomen, back, or legs.
Painful sexual intercourse
Pain during sexual activity, medically called dyspareunia, can have multiple causes, including endometriosis.
It is important to note the type of pain, whether sharp, dull, or pulsating.
Characteristics of the pain:
-
Deep, aching, or sharp pain inside
-
Intensifies in certain positions
-
Often more intense before menstruation
-
May persist after intercourse
Chronic fatigue
Fatigue is usually not considered a classic symptom of endometriosis.
Endometriosis involves a constant inflammatory reaction. This can affect the nervous system and cause exhaustion.
Nighttime awakenings due to pain or hormonal fluctuations reduce rest quality. Heavy menstrual bleeding can also lead to iron deficiency. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, paleness, and brittle nails.
Persistent pain, fertility difficulties, and reduced quality of life can contribute to anxiety or depression, which further exacerbates fatigue.
Fertility problems
Endometriosis can affect fertility through inflammation, adhesions, ovarian damage, and changes in egg quality.
The main sign is when pregnancy does not occur after 12 months of regular sexual activity (or 6 months if the woman is over 35).
How endometriosis interferes with conception:
-
Mechanically — through adhesions and blocked fallopian tubes
-
Biologically, through chronic pelvic inflammation
-
Hormonally — through effects on ovulation
-
Immunologically — by altering the environment for fertilization and implantation
