Do fillers really swell and disfigure face over time: Whole truth

Fillers are a popular tool in cosmetology, but there are many myths surrounding them. One of the most common ones is that they can increase over time and even distort facial features. Ukrainian cosmetologist Daria Tishchenko tells whether it is really true.
Do fillers really swell
There is an opinion that hyaluronic acid-based fillers "swell" over time and change the face. As it turned out, this is partly true, but there are certain nuances.
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers have the ability to attract water and swell, but you need to understand that this is due to improper injection technique in the wrong layer and area.
It can also happen due to an excessive amount of the drug.
The quality of the hyaluronic acid also plays an important role. If the filler is injected correctly and in the optimal amount, there will be no unwanted effects, and over time, the hyaluronic acid will be completely broken down by the body's enzymes.
Therefore, in order to avoid problems, it is important to choose a qualified doctor who uses only certified and registered drugs.
When not to inject fillers
Fillers based on hyaluronic acid have their own contraindications, and their injection is not always safe. Here are the main cases when the procedure should be postponed or avoided altogether:
- inflammatory processes - rashes, acne, herpes or any other infections in the area of filler injection
- autoimmune diseases - lupus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis
- oncological diseases - during treatment and rehabilitation
- pregnancy and breastfeeding - there are no sufficient studies on the safety of the procedure during this period
- allergy to filler components - especially if the composition contains lidocaine or other additional substances.
- predisposition to scarring - if you have a tendency to keloid or hypertrophic scars, you should be careful
- blood clotting disorders - taking anticoagulants or problems with coagulation can cause complications
- recent cosmetic procedures - laser resurfacing, peels, or other aggressive procedures can affect the result and cause side effects
- psychological instability - if a person has unrealistic expectations of the procedure or is in an unstable emotional state
Before the introduction of fillers, it is imperative to consult a cosmetologist and, if necessary, undergo the necessary examinations.
