Diplomatic dispute: Mexico suspends relations with Ecuador over embassy detention
Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican embassy in the country's capital, where former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas was hiding, and detained him. Following this incident, Mexico suspended relations with Ecuador, report Bloomberg and Reuters.
Mexico, according to its President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, plans to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador. He has instructed the Mexican Minister of Foreign Affairs to suspend diplomatic relations with Ecuador, calling the arrest a violation of international law and Mexico's sovereignty.
The raid, as reported by Bloomberg, occurred shortly after Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who had been in the embassy since December due to an arrest warrant issued by the Ecuadorian authorities. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated on Friday that it rejects the increased presence of Ecuadorian police agents near its embassy and demands respect for its sovereignty.
Glas, who has been convicted twice for corruption, as noted by Reuters, fled to the embassy after a chat published by the Ecuadorian Attorney General's Office suggested that a drug dealer bribed a judge to secure his early release while serving a sentence for bribery.
Recall that last year in Mexico, in the northern state of Sinaloa, cartel members attempted to release the arrested drug lord Ovidio Guzmán López, which sparked disturbances in the streets and outbreaks of violence, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 suspected criminals and 10 soldiers in clashes.
