Dermatologist explains why hair can grow from mole
Moles are present on everyone, and many people become concerned when hair starts to grow from them. A dermatologist explained that this condition is normal, but there is an important nuance to consider.
Why does hair grow on a mole
According to dermatologist Viktoria Akhtarniya, there is a myth that when hair grows from a mole, it means it is benign. However, this is not true.
The reason for this is that the hair follicle is located below the dermis, and even with superficial melanoma, hair can also grow from it.
Hair that grows through a mole is no different from hair growing on other areas of the skin, such as the scalp. Sometimes it may be thicker and darker, which is explained by a higher concentration of pigment cells around the follicle and better blood circulation in the area.
Therefore, it is important to consult doctors if any new formations appear.
Is it safe to pluck hair
It is important to remember that removing thick, coarse hair from a mole can lead to trauma to the growth. It is forbidden to remove hair from moles using wax or sugar paste.
Shaving hair on a mole with a razor is also not recommended, as there is a high risk of damaging the upper layer of the nevus. Additionally, bleeding may occur since moles are often penetrated by numerous capillaries.
Any changes to the skin, particularly moles, should be monitored carefully.
Signs of dangerous moles
Although hair growth in a mole is generally harmless, certain changes may indicate more serious skin issues. If any of the following symptoms occur, it is important to consult a doctor as soon as possible:
- asymmetry: one half of the mole does not match the other;
- uneven edges;
- the mole has changed color;
- the mole is larger than 6 mm.
