Gray hair and wrinkles on the face can appear due to a copper deficiency in the body. American doctor Asif Ahmed shared how to address this micronutrient shortfall.

Gray hair is a natural process that everyone goes through, but for some, it happens much earlier than for others.

Before reaching for any hair dye, it’s worth checking the body.

The doctor shared his own experience, recounting a time when he noticed gray hair. He then checked if there was anything in his body causing these early signs of aging.

According to him, copper levels are directly linked to gray hair, as well as to overall skin health, energy levels, and metabolism. Noticing hair color loss can be an early signal of copper deficiency, as well as general fatigue.

He added that copper deficiency is very rare, but for some reason, it has been more often seen lately. The doctor advised against taking supplements without testing your levels.

Daily copper requirement

The average adult aged 19 to 64 needs approximately 1.2 mg of copper per day. This amount should be achievable through a daily diet with good sources, including nuts and offal.

Dr. Ahmed shared a method that helped improve his hair after learning that his copper levels were low. Specifically, he found that a tablespoon of natural cocoa powder daily was beneficial.

He said that this dose provides all the necessary copper, along with added protein and fiber. One way to take the powder is by mixing it into yogurt.

You can also make a basic hot chocolate with cocoa by following a few steps: simply place a teaspoon of cocoa powder into a cup, pour in boiling water, and stir.
