US President Joe Biden called on Americans to remember the events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He emphasized the need to prevent the recurrence of such threats in the future, The Washington Post reports.

According to Biden, a meeting will be held on January 6, at which staff and members of Congress will gather to confirm the results of the free and fair presidential election and ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

“Capitol Police will stand guard over the citadel of our democracy,” Biden said.

According to him, this ceremony has made America a beacon for the free world for more than two centuries, affirming the will of the voters.

“For much of our history, this proceeding was treated as pro forma, a routine act. But after what we all witnessed on Jan. 6, 2021, we know we can never again take it for granted,” Biden wrote.

The head of the White House is convinced that Americans should be proud that US democracy has withstood this attack. But this should never be forgotten.

Biden said that the presidential election was peaceful, and he officially invited Donald Trump to the White House on the morning of January 20 to peacefully transfer power in a respectful manner.

"But we should not forget. We must remember the wisdom of the adage that any nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it,” he emphasized.

Capitol storming

In January 2021, Trump's supporters attempted to storm the Capitol building, where the Senate is located. They demanded to cancel the results of the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden.

Five people were killed during the riots, including a police officer.

In May 2023, in this case, the court sentenced the founder and leader of the far-right organization Oath Keepers, Stewart Rhodes, to 18 years in prison.
