Armenia talks about possible joining EU
Armenian Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan thinks that Armenia should consider the possibility of becoming a candidate for membership in the European Union, reports Azatutyun.am.
He said that the Armenian authorities had never discussed the possibility of joining NATO.
However, according to him, Armenia should think about the possibility of becoming a candidate for membership in the European Union.
"We are ready and will move in the direction that will provide us with the greatest security, and today democracy, being a democratic country, is our greatest security system," said Simonyan.
Aspiration to EU with no rush
The Speaker of the National Assembly said he does not want to rush to conclusions about changing the foreign policy vector.
"I don't want it to turn out that some unilateral step is taken, and it can be said that our actions show that we have much lower indicators of democracy than many of our partner countries that are already members of the European Union, and we don't say that, our partners in the European Union say it through resolutions," he said.
Simonyan added that Armenia should think in the direction of the EU, but since it is a state, it is not good to take drastic steps.
Armenia's distancing from Russia
Yesterday, it became known that the government is ready to legally freeze the country's participation in the CSTO if the position of the organization regarding the territorial integrity of Armenia does not change.
The media also reported that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, would visit Armenia in the near future.
Moreover, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia had not been an ally of Russia in the war against Ukraine since the beginning of the invasion in February 2022.
