Protests against Trump in Europe
Protests also took place in the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, and other countries. Participants voiced their opposition to Trump’s influence on democratic processes and civil rights.
In Berlin, while protesting in front of the Tesla exhibition hall, demonstrators held signs urging fellow citizens living in Germany to protest for "an end to the chaos" back home.
In the French capital, Paris, around 200 people, mostly Americans, gathered in Place de la République to protest against Trump. Some gave speeches condemning the president, while others waved signs reading “Resist tyrant,” “Rule of law,” “Feminists for freedom not fascism,” and “Save Democracy.”
Trump’s new tariffs
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on imports of goods into the US from over 180 countries. This was allegedly in response to "unfair tariffs" other countries had placed on American products.
In another executive order, Trump declared a state of emergency in the country due to the threat of a trade balance deficit. According to Bloomberg, this allows the US administration to use special powers to impose tariffs.
Some countries have already announced countermeasures in response. For example, China has imposed a 34% tariff on American goods.
Trump’s tariff program also affected Ukraine, where a universal tariff of 10% has been introduced.
