During an argument, the hardest thing is staying in control of your emotions. If someone is provoking, interrupting, manipulating, or trying to throw you off balance, raising your voice will only make things worse.
Instead, calm and confident words can help you set boundaries without getting pulled into someone else's game. RBC-Ukraine shares the phrases that can help you protect yourself without turning the situation into a fight.
"I'll continue this conversation when we're both calm."
This doesn't escalate the conflict, but it clearly shows you're not willing to keep talking while emotions are running high. It also puts you back in control of the situation.
"I won't let you speak to me in that tone."
Short, clear, and respectful. You're not attacking the other person; you’re simply setting a boundary. If they refuse to change their behavior, you're fully entitled to end the conversation.
"Help me understand what you mean."
Manipulative people often count on an emotional reaction. Asking them to explain themselves forces them to be specific instead of hiding behind vague accusations.
"I've heard your opinion, but I have my own."
You don't need to justify yourself or prove you're right. This phrase shows you've listened while making it clear you don't have to agree.
"If we can't speak respectfully, I'm ending this conversation."
A calm warning is often more effective than an argument. The key is being prepared to actually walk away if your boundaries continue to be ignored.
"I'm not going to respond to insults."
Instead of matching aggression with aggression, you calmly point out unacceptable behavior. This denies the other person the emotional reaction they're looking for.
"Let's get back to the facts instead of blaming each other."
When a discussion turns personal, this phrase helps bring it back to the real issue. If the other person isn't interested in a constructive conversation, that will quickly become clear without another argument.
