6 tips to avoid catching new COVID strain
A new strain of Covid, named XEC, is spreading across Europe and is reportedly more contagious than its previous variants. However, there are several steps you can take to protect yourself.
6 effective tips to avoid catching Coronavirus
British family doctor Matthew Calcasola shared seven practices he follows to strengthen his immune system and avoid infection.
Get plenty of sleep
Sleep is the foundation of good health. During sleep, the body recovers, and your immune system is no exception. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night. When well-rested, the body produces cytokines, proteins that help fight infections and inflammation. Studies have shown that those who sleep less than seven hours a night are three times more likely to catch a winter virus, such as a cold.
Stay hydrated
Proper hydration aids the immune system by flushing out toxins and maintaining optimal cell function. Doctors recommend drinking at least 2 liters of water per day. Even mild dehydration can suppress the immune system, making it essential to keep drinking throughout the day.
Eat balanced diet
A nutrient-rich diet is crucial for supporting immune function. Focus on whole foods that are high in vitamins and minerals, especially those containing antioxidants. Fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins should form the base of your diet. Vitamins C, D, and zinc are particularly vital for immune health.
Stay active
Moderate exercise is a powerful way to boost immunity. It improves circulation and helps immune cells travel more efficiently throughout the body. Whether it's brisk walking, cycling, or strength training, aim for about 150 minutes of exercise per week.
Be mindful of stress
Chronic stress can significantly impact immune function, increasing the risk of illness. Try meditation and yoga to help lower cortisol levels and support a healthy immune response.
Say 'yes' to vaccinations
The doctor emphasized the importance of vaccines for maintaining immunity, whether it's the flu vaccine or other essential immunizations.
