What to do before cleaning your headlights
Before any procedure, the headlight should be thoroughly washed to remove dust, dirt and road grime. If you skip this step, rubbing the surface while cleaning can cause dirt particles to scratch the plastic.
It is equally important to protect the areas of the car body around the headlights. Painter's tape is suitable for this — it will help prevent accidental damage to the paintwork while you work.
Once this simple preparation is complete, you can move directly on to cleaning.
Toothpaste, baking soda, soap and lemon juice
This method combines several simple ingredients. Baking soda and toothpaste act as mild abrasives, while the soap helps remove dirt from the surface.
To prepare the mixture, you will need to:
- grate approximately one-quarter of a bar of laundry soap,
- add three tablespoons of toothpaste,
- add one tablespoon of baking soda,
- finish by adding the juice of half a lemon.

Mix everything thoroughly until you get a smooth consistency. Then apply the mixture to the headlight surface with a sponge and gently rub it, paying particular attention to the most yellowed areas.
Keep in mind that the mixture should be left on the surface for no more than five minutes, after which it should be rinsed off with plenty of water and the headlight dried thoroughly.
Lemon and baking soda
Another simple option is to use an ordinary lemon and baking soda. When the acidic juice comes into contact with the baking soda, a reaction occurs that helps remove dirt from the surface.
How to use it:
- cut a lemon in half,
- generously sprinkle the cut side with baking soda,
- rub the headlight with the lemon half, periodically squeezing out a little juice and adding more baking soda.

After treating the surface, rinse it thoroughly with clean water.
Baking soda and vinegar
For this method, you need to make a kind of paste using baking soda and white vinegar. Mix them in a ratio of approximately 1:2 to create a smooth mixture.

Apply the prepared paste to the headlight using a microfiber cloth. Gently wipe the surface in circular motions without applying excessive pressure.
After the procedure, rinse off any remaining product with water and dry the headlight thoroughly.
Keep in mind that homemade mixtures may help remove surface dirt and mild cloudiness, but if the plastic is heavily oxidized or has serious damage, professional restoration may be necessary.
WD-40 — quick shine that doesn't last long

However, this is only a temporary effect. The product does not actually remove the yellowing; instead, it creates a film on the surface that masks the problem. After rain or washing the car, the effect quickly disappears. In addition, road dust may accumulate more readily on the greasy surface.
Therefore, this hack should not be considered a proper method for restoring headlights.
Insect repellent — a risky experiment
Another popular method found online is using mosquito spray containing DEET (diethyltoluamide).
Those who recommend this method apply a small amount of repellent to a cloth and quickly wipe the plastic surface. The product can indeed affect the damaged outer layer of the plastic, making the headlight appear clearer for a short time.

But this is where the main danger lies. If the repellent is left on the plastic for too long or used in excessive amounts, the surface can become damaged, cloudy or uneven.

Brake fluid — a hack best forgotten
Brake fluid also appears among car hacks for cleaning headlights. Its proponents claim that it can quickly remove the oxidized outer layer of plastic.
However, this method is particularly risky. Brake fluid can be aggressive toward many surfaces, and if it gets onto the car's paintwork, it can cause serious damage.
