Some drinks consumed in the evening can not only quench thirst but also help control weight. Several options have been named that may support metabolism, reduce feelings of hunger, and promote the weight loss process, according to Eating Well.
Kefir
Kefir is a fermented dairy drink that tastes similar to tangy yogurt. It contains protein and probiotics that may support weight loss.
One glass of kefir contains 9 g of protein. It promotes a feeling of fullness and helps suppress nighttime cravings for food.
Consuming protein before bed also helps stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the night, shifting the body into fat-burning mode during fasting.
Kefir contains both whey and casein proteins, two types that stimulate muscle protein synthesis overnight when consumed before sleep. In addition, its calcium and vitamin D content support muscle recovery and bone health.
A balanced gut microbiome is increasingly linked to better weight regulation, as it may reduce inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity.
Water
Drinking water in the evening does not directly boost metabolism, but it can create a feeling of fullness and reduce nighttime snacking. Start with a glass of water before or during dinner.
First, drink a glass of water, then eat your protein-rich snack.
Green tea
Green tea is not only calorie-free but also rich in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant that helps burn fat.
Choosing decaffeinated tea is ideal close to bedtime, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine. Although caffeinated green tea contains more catechins, decaffeinated green tea still retains most of its catechin content.
Cherry juice
Sleep is a critical factor in weight control, as poor sleep can disrupt hunger-regulating hormones such as ghrelin and leptin, leading to increased appetite and cravings. Tart cherry juice is a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that supports sleep quality.
In addition, tart cherry juice contains polyphenols, including anthocyanins, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Functional drinks
Functional drinks are a category of non-alcoholic beverages that contain health-beneficial ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, herbs, vitamins, minerals, or other compounds.
These may include prebiotic sodas, kombucha, infused teas, or plant-based milks.
For example, prebiotic sodas contain fiber with little or no sugar.
Other ingredients, such as magnesium and adaptogens like ashwagandha, are linked to reduced stress and better sleep, which may support weight loss.
Other weight loss tips
Go to bed earlier. Going to bed late is usually associated with consuming more calories at the end of the day, which can accumulate over time and make weight loss more difficult.
Try setting a “wind-down alarm” to remind yourself to switch into rest mode earlier. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep.
Put your phone away. Scrolling may feel relaxing, but it actually does the opposite. Blue light from screens suppresses melatonin production.
Insufficient sleep and poor sleep quality are linked to obesity. Poor sleep can increase hunger hormones the next day and reduce energy needed for exercise, making weight loss harder.
Limit alcohol consumption. Minimizing alcohol intake in the evening helps improve sleep. While a glass of wine may help you fall asleep, it usually leads to more disrupted sleep and less time spent in REM sleep.
Alcohol can also cause more hot flashes in women in perimenopause and menopause, further disrupting sleep when it may already be an issue.
