3 red flags in conversation that can expose betrayer in minutes
How to tell if you can’t trust someone (photo: magnific)
Trust takes years to build but can be destroyed in a matter of seconds. Often, we instinctively sense that someone is unreliable but ignore that inner voice, dismissing it as our own suspicion.
RBC-Ukraine explains that there are specific behavioral signs that can reveal an untrustworthy person.
Gossiping and casually revealing other people’s secrets
This is one of the simplest and quickest tests of reliability. If someone readily tells you intimate details about other people’s lives, shares their secrets or openly discusses their flaws behind their backs, be sure they could do the same with your information.
How it manifests:
- Phrases like: “I’m going to tell you something, but don’t tell anyone.”
- Putting down people who aren’t present during conversations with you.
- Using other people’s secrets as a way to make themselves seem more important in your eyes.
Chronic avoidance of responsibility
A reliable person is capable of admitting their mistakes. Someone you can’t trust will always find someone else to blame. Such people are skilled at shifting responsibility onto circumstances, colleagues, the weather or even you.
Red flags include:
- The person constantly plays the “victim” who always has bad things happen because of others.
- They never seem to say things like, “I made a mistake” or “It’s my fault, I’ll fix it.”
- A tendency toward gaslighting – trying to convince you that you misunderstood everything or caused the conflict yourself.
Inconsistency between words and actions (and changing stories)
Lies are difficult to maintain over the long term. If someone constantly gets confused about details in their stories, changes their version of events, or promises one thing but does another, it’s a major red flag.
Reliability is based on predictability. When someone’s words repeatedly don’t match their actions, even in small things – such as constantly being late without warning or failing to keep minor promises – it can indicate a lack of respect for other people’s time and boundaries.
Have you ever encountered people who managed to perfectly hide these traits until it was too late?
